Bad news: it's a Spanish ref tonight

Chelsea`s confidence in obtaining a favourable result tonight will have taken
a blow when they found out it is a Spanish referee who will be tooting at
Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea will be dismayed to learn that the referee for tonight`s game against
Liverpool is Luis Medina Cantalejo. As his name suggests, Medina Cantalejo is
Spanish, so we are sure that he is going to be as fair and unbiased towards
El Spanish Liverpool as Fox News was towards George Bush.

Medina Cantalejo, 45, is a municipal employee from Seville. He comes from a
family of referees: his father and grandfather also blew the whistle, and
Luis played in the Spanish third division. He rose to officiating Primera
division games in 1998, and has now joined the 'Elite Categery` of referees
who also arbitrates international matches (since 2002), including a few 2006
World Cup Final games in Germany. One of these was the quarter final between
France and Brazil. Perhaps more memorable was the game between Italy and
Australia which he also reffed, awarding a very light penalty to Italy in the
last minute. That`s a 'light penalty` as in Medina Cantalejo rewarded an
Italian dive.

Medina Cantalejo has not been without criticism this season in Spain, where
Madrid have tried to suggest that there is a referee conspiracy to deprive
them of a third successive League title. Rather hilariously, however, it has
been Madrid which has benefited from some woeful officiating this season.
Luis gives an average of 8 yellow cards per game, which is a lot.

The bad news for everyone watching tonight is that Medina Cantalejo is a
pedantic ref who is never more delighted than when the spotlight is on him.
Apparently he has a personal trainer and trains 6 days a week, and he also
watches matches on video and studies the players, but he also studies his own
movements and expressions on video. Perhaps he practices drawing cards out of
his pocket whilst showing off his better profile.

His worst moment was when he had to stop a Barça - Real Madrid game because
a supporter threw a pig`s head at Madrid`s Luis Figo. Despite raining
missiles down on the Portuguese winger all game, Barça never suffered any
suspension even though Medina Cantalejo recorded the incident in his report.
Barça argued, successfully in the end, that it was a 'provocation` that
Figo, an ex-Barça player and considered the club`s biggest traitor, took the
corners for Madrid.

From his extensive history, we can also note that, in 2004 Luis booked the
Graz AK captain Rene Aufhauser twice but failed to send him off in a
Champions League game against a certain Liverpool FC in a textbook example of
what is commonly known as 'Graeme Poll syndrome`.

Medina Cantalejo`s umpire skills when they beat Galatasaray 3-2 in 2006.

Fans of Catalan club Espanyol feel especially bitter towards Medina
Cantalejo: he officiated a derby with Barcelona last Autumn in which he
awarded a non-existent penalty in the 5th minute of extra-time (an amount
added on that even Siralex would have considered excessive in the
circumstances) allowing Barça to win. He also whistled the Barça - Madrid
game earlier this season where Madrid were thoroughly beaten. Most of the
games he`s refereed this season in Spain have not avoided polemic: in the
above Barça - Espanyol game Espanyol had an expulsion chalked off on appeal.

English. What`s less lucky is that he`s a player who can be easily conned by
dives and simulations, which is certainly the speciality of the likes of
Ickle Stevie G MoTM.

But the fact that this referee has been attributed to tonight`s match raises
a rather fundamental question: aren`t there UEFA rules forbidding the man in
the middle from whistling a game involving a team from his home country? How
can it be fair on Chelsea if the Spanish ref is officiating against the club
that contributes more than any other to the Spanish national team?
這名裁判吹罰今晚比賽所引起的問題是 難道歐足聯沒有相關限制條例禁止與球隊相同
國籍的裁判吹罰比賽嗎 讓一個西班牙裁判吹罰一隻提供西班牙國腳人數比任何西甲球隊
都多的球隊比賽 這對切爾西公平嗎!!
