Meet the ref: Tom Henning
After the 0-0 at the Nou Camp, Barça could not stop whinging about Chelsea`s
tactics. They also attacked the referee, German Wolfgang Stark, who was
described as an 'Anglophile` who was also a personal friend of Michael
Ballack. It was not normal that Barça committed 7 fouls and Chelsea 20, and
yet both received only 2 yellow cards (according to their logic). Apparently
Bosingwa`s shirt tug on Thierry Henry also deserved a penalty, and it is
incomprehensible that Michael Ballack didn`t receive a second yellow card.

One newspaper also pointed out that Stark was so unsympathetic to the Spanish
that he forced Barcelona to play on the evening of March 11th 2004, when
Spain had suffered a terrorist attack that killed 191 persons. It was, said
the newspaper, at Stark`s insistence that the match be played (with the
connivance of UEFA). And in that match, which Barça lost to Celtic, Stark
sent off two Barça players. The description of this bloke failed to point
out that the second player red carded was after the whistle, because he was
fighting in the tunnel with a Celtic player. Who was also red carded.

and have been cautiously watching who will be blowing the whistle tomorrow

Henning has met Barcelona before: one month ago, he umpired a game that ended
5-2 against Lyon. He demonstrated the kind of neutrality for which Barcelona
are hoping by showing 6 yellow cards to Lyon and one to Barcelona (Thierry
Henry), sending of Lyon`s Juninho in the91st minute.

Henning is a referee who is much loved in Spain: he oversaw Villareal`s 1-1
against Arsenal at their place only last month. And in October 2008 he
presided over a game between Atletico de Madrid and Olympique de Marseille
which ended 2-1 for the locals. But it was infamous because the game saw the
kind of scenes that were eliminated in English football in the 1980s: battles
between supporters and the police, and racist chanting. On the basis of
Henning`s report, UEFA`s disciplinary committee punished Atletico to play 2
games behind closed doors (and a third as a suspended sentence), as well as a
fine and a suspension for (then) coach Javier Aguirre.

Henning Øvrebø is a UEFA Elite Category referee who started in the
Champions League in 2001, and has been a regular ever since. He replaced
Terje Hauge as the Norwegian referee of choice, and he went to Euro 2008,
making a mistake in the game between Italy and Romania. However, he also
admitted this, but Øvrebø went home. However, he is also on the provisional
list of referees for the 2010 World Cup.

Henning`s full-time job is a psychologist. Cue inevitable jokes about being
able to deal with all the head-cases on the pitch. He must be good: he won
the prestigious Kniksen award for 'Referee of the Year' in the Norwegian
Premier League in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. He was also asked to take
charge of the 2008 Ukrainian Cup semi-final first leg game between Dynamo
Kyiv and Metalurh Donetsk.

The bad news is that Henning is a bit more card-happy than Stark was last
week. He has given his fair share of penalties: 4 in the Champions League
since 2004. In international / European club games, he has awarded 6
penalties to the home side and 4 to the away side. In that timeframe he has
also sent off 6 players in Champions League games. To be fair, 7 of these
were in one particularly nasty game between Lazio and Dynamo Bucharest. 4 of
the players he has sent off were away players. And he gives out a lot of
bookings: 6 per game is a fairly common score for the Norwegian, again
tending to favour the home side and to be harsh to the away team.

too harsh to a normally physical game, but he is also not going to be taken
in by the likes of Daniel Alves` play-acting.
