Chelsea - A Look on Youth!

In the years since I started writing for Merlin and Chelsea Vital have I
written many times, complaining, about our youth development.

I have harangued Frank Arnesen and held him accountable to his promises when
he was appointed; promises that so far have been blatantly unfulfilled.

Arnesen`s contract has run out and he will continue on a rolling one-year
contract with the club. He has also been promoted to the board that deals
with the pure football issues of the club.

Some time ago I did start to question my own reactions. It was part of
realising that the so called youth revolution of Arsenal is primarily a
chimera and partly looking at the club that Arsenal apart probably is by far
the most successful club in England in bringing about youth development, Man
U. Both clubs have by far been the most successful the last ten years in
attracting youth talent, but they are still different in how they introduce
them into their teams. Still, both have a tradition of bringing youth up that
Chelsea lacks.

I found that much of my complaining was backbone reaction. The same reaction
I find so much on our site today. Sometimes very abusively put out in the end
of the match-day moments threads.

I do no longer believe that the way to make youth cross the very big gorge
into adult football is to just play them or bring them on from the bench. It
is not that easy, far from it.
我不認為單單讓年輕球員從板凳上拉到場上比賽就能使他們跨過這巨大鴻溝 成為成人球
員。事情不是那麼容易。

Chelsea has chosen to instead allow many of our youth players to go out to
other clubs; the hope of course being that they will play competitive
football though not at the level Chelsea has to demand. It has not been very
successful for most youth players. Many big promises have rather un-developed
or how to put it by this loan policy. I will mention two players I had great
hopes for some 3-4 years ago, and today I advocate that Chelsea should sell
them. Ben Sahar and Scott Sinclair.

I think both were better as 17-18 year olds than they are as almost mature
players of 20- 21! Wonder if they just played on then, and later became aware
what it takes to become a player of Chelsea standard and that suffocated them?

So what is destroying these players? I simply do not know, but some answers
might be; the influence of lesser managers, a complacency due to being paid a
lot of money, an overinflated ego, a lack of willingness to put in the work
required, hopelessness when they realise that too many older players are
ahead of them in Chelsea, a lack of toughness, premature acceleration of
their talent, not enough support from the club, fragile temperaments and
confidence… I do not know, I doubt any one can say there is a general
answer. Or is the gulf between promising youth and mature players too big?
所以是甚麼殺了它們？我不知道 缺少教練的關注？高薪之下的懈怠？自我感覺良好？
缺乏熱忱？隊內競爭壓力？不夠堅韌？俱樂部的支持不夠？缺乏自信？我不知道
也許是成熟球員與年輕球員這道溝太大了

I do not follow other clubs as closely, but I have a feeling that Arsenal
almost never loan away the players they really believe in. I see very few
Arsenal players that have been on loan and that comes back to the club.
Sebastian Larsson was shipped off to Birmingham and has carved out a nice
career there. Jermaine Pennant never made it in Arsenal, nor did David
Bentley. Chelsea has lost talent like Glen Johnson and Lassana Diarra due to
their insistent demands to play more games, ie an unwillingness to fight
their way through the competition in the club. Mikel has developed and fought
his way into the team despite competition with players like Diarra, not to
mention Ballack and Makelele.
我不常注意其他隊伍的比賽 但是我印象阿森納從不將它們真正信任的球員外租
我很少看到阿森納租出去的球員回到球隊。拉森賣到博明罕並表現不錯 鵬南特在阿森納
打不上主力 本特力也一樣。切爾西失去了格蘭囧僧及迪亞拉，因為它們要求更多上場
空間，這也說明他們不敢留下 成長 通過競爭取得正選位置。米克爾成長了 也在與狄亞
拉的爭奪中搶到主力位置 更別說其他的競爭對手巴拉克 愛心等人。

Some claim that Chelsea ruined Mikel by playing him in the holding role and
taking away his offensive qualities that was what supposedly attracted
attention to him in the beginning. I beg to differ; I do not think Mikel has
shown much of that apart from one Africa Cup some tournaments back. He is not
a big offensive asset at Chelsea and has never been. (Look at his shot, is
all I say) and that is not why he has matured into a first team player in one
of the very best clubs in the world. We rarely even think of Mikel being
their age when he made it into the first team, and he still does not play
every game.

Arsenal are good, but honestly their youth development is not as successful
as Wenger claimed now for years. When did Arsenal win anything last? Not
since Wenger started to push his protégés into his first team and selling
experience. They have wonderful talent, but still only Cesc Fabregas has
taken that last step into world class. It is always, next year…with Arsenal.
阿森納做得很好 這幾年 老實說他們的青訓已經沒有溫格之前說的那麼好了 因為他們
這幾年沒贏到甚麼。他們友有才能的青年 但也只有天魔法布雷達到世界級水準 它們總是
說著明年 明年.....

Sir Red Nose has a slightly different philosophy it seems. He allows his
talent spots and they respond. Compare the playing time of say Wellbeck and
Machado and what they have accomplished to the playing time Sinclair and Di
Santo have gotten. I think you will find that our kids have played as many or
more minutes and in more games - and done very little.

Maybe the answer simply lies not with the club and our managers but with the
players themselves. They have gotten their shots, not in abundance but still
- and simply have not taken them. (Exception Mancienne that has made true
contributions when he has played I think, though not as good as the players
ahead of him yet. Ivanovic drove me crazy by not making it into the team for
18 months, costing ￡9m or so. But when he got his shot, he took it. He is
still not first choice, but we all have a new respect and admiration of him.
And he is not whining about not being played!).
也許問題不在俱樂部 也不再教練 而在他們自己 他們被給予了機會 雖然不是完全充足
-但是卻沒有好好把握 (除了漫西恩 唯有他做到實質表現 也許沒有他前方的主力那麼好
九百萬的一萬諾維奇一年半沒出賽幾乎讓我發瘋 但當他有了機會 他把握住了 他還不是
第一選擇 但是我們都尊重 崇拜他 他在板凳上話也不多)

We have to realise that Chelsea have an extremely good football team and the
old guys are not there to give up their spots to kids. It is not in their
make-up. The kids simply have to prove themselves to be better at training
and reserve games. Youth alone is not a free pass into world class football.
我們要知道切爾西有一個很強的隊伍 而這些老傢伙生來就不準備讓位給年輕人 他們必須
在訓練中證明自己 年輕並不代表輕易進入世界級足球

I am disappointed with Sinclair, Sahar and I am getting disappointed by Di
Santo. I do not think any of them have taken their shots.

You can always discuss how many shots a player should get. In a smaller club,
like Arsenal(!) they get a lot. In Man U they do not get more than they do in
Chelsea, but they take them. Look at the Newcastle game ahead of the CL-final
when Sir Alex played mainly kids, they took their chance. (It was a stupid
tactical move that I think severely destroyed Man U in the final as their
players were not up to game standard. (We saw it when Hiddink rested Drogba,
he struggled in the game after as a in-form player should never rest in top
football. Only out of form players should be rested. Even with the risk of
injuries).
我們可以討論一個球員可以得到多少機會 在阿森納可以得到很多 在曼聯沒有在切爾西
那麼多 但是他們能把握機會。在冠軍杯決賽前對紐卡的比賽，佛格森派上年輕人，他們

I have no solutions; I used to have the belief that the answer is just to
play the kids. I do not think so any more. Still I say that the Carling Cup
should be a reservation for testing youth talent, not like Grant and Scolari
used it. Hopefully Ancelotti realise this and will mix talent with experience
in the drink cup. In all other competitions Chelsea can not really take the
chance with youth. The stakes are too high. The best that day has to play.

Nothing makes a player better than the faith of the manager. Drogba is a pure
example; he simply does not seem able to play well for managers he does not
get along with. Kids need that encouragement more than anyone. I think that
is the most important ingredient of all.
沒有甚麼比教練的信任更重要 德羅巴就是個例子 他幾乎無法在與他不合的教練手下踢
出好球。沒有誰比年輕人更需要鼓勵。

Chelsea is a title-driven club. (And a managerial ejector seat.) So probably
the biggest reason for our lack of youth development is that fact - the
managers simply can not afford to take chances with kids. Our demands (and we
all have them while claiming we want youth to play, though there is ample
proof that youth development is not compatible with immediate football
success), Roman`s expectations and the club`s goals simply are the key reason
why kids to not get to play at Chelsea.
切爾西有爭冠壓力(也有教練彈射座椅)所以青訓失敗的最大原因也是這事實-教練不敢給
年輕人機會。當我們鼓吹給年輕人機會時 我們也心知肚明我們對冠軍的渴望
事實證明青訓跟快速的成功不相容 阿布與俱樂部的期望正是青訓失敗的原因

One solution I believe in that both José Mourinho and Arsene Whiner promoted
was allowing the English top clubs to have youth/reserve teams playing in the
lower leagues. Then they would not be subjected to less good managers. An
anathema to the belief of English FA though so we will never see it.
一個解決方式 也就是魔力鳥與阿森抱怨者鼓吹的 低級聯賽 讓豪門隊的預備隊參加低級聯
賽雖然英足總厭惡這個提議。

(And by the way, Chelsea is not the only club in the world struggling with
this. One example, Juventus has Sebastian Giovinco, universally acknowledged
at being among the most talented youths in Europe, and he can still not hold
down a spot in the team!)
順帶一提 切爾西不是唯一在青訓這方面掙扎的球隊。宇宙第一的尤文圖司有橋文科
被認為是最有希望的新秀 他還無法站穩主力

Maybe our whining for youth is only a reflection of the fairytale aspect of
football - we do so want to have surprises and new blood all the time. (It
reminds a bit about silly season does it not?) Arsenal does, but do we fear
them anymore? Do Arsenal fans really like the fact that they have youth, but
no success?
也許我們的抱怨只是足球的另一面-我們都希望有驚喜 希望有新血加入(話說回來 阿森納
不是一直有心血嗎? 但是我們怕它們嗎? 槍迷真的對他們擁有新秀 卻沒有成功感到滿意
嗎?)

Or maybe the answer is that we simply have to exercise more patience with our
talented kids….?
答案也許只是耐心

Finally, I do believe though that the young players themselves simply have to
show more the few times they get the chance. If they do in Man U, why can
they not do it in Chelsea? It is not easy and should not be easy to win a
place in a Chelsea eleven. It takes not only talent but a very strong mind,
psyche. Maybe the latter is actually more important than the first. JT might
have the answer to that question.
最後 我相信年輕球員除了要把握機會表現外，它們能在曼聯做到 為何在切爾西做不到?
這不容易 但也不應該容易 在切爾西贏得主力位置 除了天分 也需要強大的精神力以及
原力 也許原力比天分更加重要 獎特里應該有答案

Meanwhile, I have to admit that I am disappointed in the youths (most) that
have gotten their chances so far in Chelsea the last couple of years.
最後 我還是對這幾年的青訓失敗感到失望
