UEFA rewards Tom Henning Øvrebø
Chelsea supporters still haven`t forgotten how the catastrophic refereeing in
our Champions League semi-final against Barcelona led to our unjust
elimination. Our sense of injustice is only fuelled by the fact that, if
anything, the referee in question has been rewarded.
繼上賽季災難性的植髮後 切爾西球迷的fucking disgrace火又再一次被激怒 就在歐足聯

Few Chelsea supporters will forget the name of Tom Henning Øvrebø,
Norwegian referee who chose to ignore every single penalty shout during
Chelsea`s Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. There were a good 6
of them, of which 4 were stone-wall. That includes one incident when Øvrebø
 had a clear vision of defender Gerard Pique handling the ball in the box,
and he couldn`t even use the Thierry Henry defence of the incident being
blocked by other players as there are photographs of Øvrebø watching, just
metres away as Piqué pats the ball.

suspended for 4 matches (later reduced to 3 on appeal) and Bosingwa for 2
matches.

Any sense of fairness dictates that the really guilty party in this farce
also be punished, i.e. that UEFA realise that Tom Henning Øvrebø`s
performance was so outrageous, so awful, such a mockery, that he be taken off
any list of referees to be used by UEFA. How could anyone have any faith in
the capacities of a man who was so obviously biased against one side, and
whose incompetence altered the result of the game?

Given the ardour with which UEFA prosecuted Drogba and Bosingwa, both of whom
reacted in a totally human way to the results of UEFA`s incompetence, one
could have expected that UEFA takes the 'fish-stinking Norwegian` aside and
never give him anything more controversial than the first rounds of the
InterToto Cup to arbitrate. UEFA being UEFA, we could have understood if they
decided to do this in private, not spilling anything out in public.

Er, no, not a bit of it. A look at this week`s Champions League games reveals
that Tom Henning Øvrebø has been given one of the highest profile games to
officiate. He`ll be ignoring the penalty appeals for the match between Unirea
and Sevilla tomorrow night. Now Sevilla have already qualified for the next
round, but Unirea, managed by one Dan Petrescu, are in a good position to
qualify from a group that also contains Stuttgart and Rangers. A win for the
Romanians could see them through.

Is it a coincidence that such a match has been attributed to the malleable
Norwegian? The Romanian side, a bunch of minnows (even in Romania), are
enjoying their first Champions League season, and have already performed far
better than anticipated. Should they manage to beat Sevilla (who have nothing
much to play for) Unirea would achieve something historical.

It would, however, also mean that (say) Stuttgart, a big German club, don`t
go through. For UEFA, that would be disappointing, especially as German
football is likely to be lamenting the elimination of Bayern Munich this
week. That`s a huge market that UEFA will lose, especially since the other
German side left (Wolfsburg) is one of the smaller clubs.

One of the explanations given as to Chelsea`s elimination last season was not
only that UEFA boss Michel Platini doesn`t like English football and he is
not keen on the domination of the Premier League. He certainly didn`t welcome
a second successive Chelsea - Manchester United Champions League final and
said as much. Apart from anything, that would have represented a significant
loss of revenue for UEFA, which would have found it difficult to market the
biggest club competition in the world if it was clearly dominated by one
country. Barça going to the final (and subsequently winning) was very much
in UEFA`s interest, in the same way that, coincidentally, it was considerably
more in FIFA`s interests that France will go to the World Cup finals than
Ireland.

It is, of course, a step into Konspiracy Theory paranoia to speculate that
Tom Henning Øvrebø therefore did Platini`s bidding by 'ensuring` that
Chelsea were knocked out. But Chelsea`s feeling of injustice is only fuelled
by the realisation that, if Henning Øvrebø was considered incompetent, he
would have been sanctioned. On the contrary, he`s actually been rewarded: a
careful look at the Champions League so far reveals that Henning Øvrebø has
already been involved in 3 Champions League games. That includes Juventus -
Bordeaux and Debrecen - Lyon. Neither saw any penalties given. If anything,
Henning Øvrebø has been rewarded and faced no punishment from UEFA for his
lamentable performance at Stamford Bridge in April. As an 'arranger` for
UEFA, Henning Øvrebø has been put in charge of his 4th Champions League
game this season, a match where Europe`s football authorities have no
interest in seeing the underdog progress.

Personally I`d love Dan Petrescu`s side to progress. I doubt it will happen,
and if anything we`ll read about the slap-headed honorary Catalan having
failed to see even the most blatant incidents in the Romanians` favour. And
that by the Spring, the fish-stinking Norwegian will be happily whistling the
quarter and semi-finals.
