The result marked a considerable improvement for the side coached by Carlos Queiroz, who drew 0-0 against Cape Verde a week earlier. In the absence of Jose Bosingwa, Ferreira has reverted to right-back, his favoured position, for the national team, and it was from there that he played the first 45 minutes against Cameroon. Carvalho and Deco, who both missed the close of the club season with injury, each played the 90 minutes to gain valuable match fitness ahead of South Africa. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/99/a8/0,,10268~8824985,00.jpg
Deco is challenged by Alex song Raul Meireles scored in either half for the Portuguese, who were facing 10 men after Cameroon forward Samuel Eto'o was dismissed for two yellow cards, the first a foul on Ferreira. Manchester United's Nani scored the third for Portugal 10 minutes from time after Achille Webo had pulled one back. Portugal's final pre-tournament friendly is against Mozambique on June 8. Elsewhere Holland beat Ghana, who are missing Michael Essien this summer, 4-1, Australia triumphed 1-0 against Denmark and Switzerland suffered a 1-0 defeat against Costa Rica. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2063821,00.html CLEAN SHEET FOR IVANOVIC Posted on: Thu 03 Jun 2010 Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic played 90 minutes in Serbia's disappointing 0-0 draw with Poland on Wednesday night. The defender returned to the side after sitting out the weekend's defeat to New Zealand, and will be pleased to have kept a clean sheet, though the team's poor form continues. Ivanovic played at right-back, the position he has become accustomed to both at club and international level, but was not partnered on the night by Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic. The Serbs had the better of the game, but again proved impotent in front of goal, Birmingham City's new signing Nikola Zigic having little sight of goal, while Arsenal's Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was on hand to prevent Danko Lazovic. The Serbs have one more game to prepare for the World Cup, against Cameroon on Saturday, before they start their campaign against Ghana on June 13. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2065015,00.html FRENCH STRUGGLES CONTINUE Posted on: Fri 04 Jun 2010 France's World Cup preparations continue to stutter after a 1-0 defeat to China on Friday, with both Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka playing the first hour. Before the game Malouda had called for Les Bleus to sharpen up defensively, particularly in the first half, and while they did not concede early this time, eventually falling to a 68th minute free-kick from Zhou Xiang Deng, their struggle for goals continues. The Chelsea pair almost combined for a goal in the first minute, when Malouda's effort was smothered by the Chinese goalkeeper, and again in the 26th when Malouda laid on a smart pass for Anelka, who shot wide. The wide man later shot high himself after escaping the attentions of his markers, before both were withdrawn in the 62nd minute. This was France's last preparatory game before heading to South Africa, and coach Raymond Domenech has plenty of work to do before their first game of the tournament, against Uruguay on June 11. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~2064815,00.html DROGBA SUFFERS ARM FRACTURE Posted on: Fri 04 Jun 2010 Didier Drogba has fractured a bone in his right arm, during Ivory Coast's friendly against Japan on Friday. The forward, 32, picked up the injury after a clash with Japanese defender Marcos Tulio Tanaka in the first half of Les Elephants' 2-0 win. Drogba had flicked the ball over the defender's head before he was caught by a high boot. The striker refused a stretcher but left the field immediately. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/43/b9/0,,10268~8829251,00.jpg
Drogba injury Moments earlier he had opened the scoring with a deflected free-kick. Salomon Kalou also played, staying on for the entire 90 minutes. Drogba is a major doubt for the World Cup, which kicks off in South Africa a week today. Team spokesman Eric Kacou said that Drogba's fracture was confirmed by doctors after he left the field. 'It is a fracture in his right arm,' Kacou said. 'The doctor hasn't said yet whether he can play in the World Cup.' 'He had a lot of pain,' said Ivory Coast boss Sven-Goran Eriksson. 'Of course I'm worried. He's captain and one of the world's best players. It was unlucky. It wasn't bad or stupid. He (Tanaka) didn't want to hurt anyone. Football is a game of contact.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2065295,00.html WORLD CUP: STOCH AND IVANOVIC SATURDAY WINNERS Posted on: Sat 05 Jun 2010 Chelsea's Eastern European representatives at the World Cup, Miroslav Stoch and Branislav Ivanovic, both enjoyed victories in their final games on home soil before departing for South Africa. Slovakia were 3-0 winners over Costa Rica on Saturday afternoon, Stoch starting the game on the left wing and playing 77 minutes before being replaced by Erik Jendrisek. The Chelsea man had a part in the first goal having gone close to scoring himself early in the game. The big news of the game was the ankle injury suffered by Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, which makes him a doubt for the World Cup. Slovakia's goals were scored through an own goal, Robert Vittek and Stanislav Sestak. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/cc/bd/0,,10268~8830412,00.jpg
Ivanovic Later in the day Ivanovic played the full 90 minutes of Serbia's win although it wasn't the best of evenings for his side's defence. They shipped three goals, coming from behind twice to beat Cameroon 4-3. Serbia were without Nemanja Vidic and suspension made Samuel Eto'o unavailable for Cameroon. Former Chelsea player Geremi came on for Cameroon at half-time. Milos Krasic, Dejan Stankovic, Wolves's Nenad Milijas from the penalty spot and Marko Pantelic were the Serbian scorers, all in a first-half that ended 4-2. The African side pulled another back on 67 minutes but the Europeans held on for a welcome victory after a warm-up defeat by New Zealand and a draw with Poland. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2066106,00.html JOE NETS IN ENGLAND WARM-UP Posted on: Mon 07 Jun 2010 Joe Cole played the full 90 minutes, while his three Chelsea team-mates played one half of England's 3-0 win over South African club side Platinum Stars on Monday afternoon. The game, an unofficial friendly, which will not count towards players' cap counts or goals records, was used as a final warm-up game before the World Cup kicks off on Friday, with England's involvement beginning on Saturday when they meet USA. Cole netted England's second goal, which came after John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole had been substituted, the Chelsea number 10 the only man to play on after half-time with manager Fabio capello making 10 changes. Terry, Lampard and Ashley Cole were all withdrawn having made low key appearances. Spurs forward Jermain Defoe converted captain Steven Gerrard's pull-back three minutes in to open the scoring, after former Chelsea man Shaun Wright-Phillips had put the Liverpool man through, before ex-Blue Glen Johnson gave away a penalty, missed by the Platinum forward. Joe's extended spell on the pitch paid off midway through the second half, as he converted England's second following a fast England breakaway, Wayne Rooney laying the goal on. The Manchester United man added a third himself with a sharp volley after James Milner had crossed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2066936,00.html TWO IN, ONE OUT FOR PORTUGAL Posted on: Tue 08 Jun 2010 Ricardo Carvalho and Deco both played for Portugal as they beat Mozambique 3-0 in their final pre-World Cup friendly on Tuesday. Paulo Ferreira was an unused sub and Deco was withdrawn on the hour as the Selecao laboured to victory in Johannesburg, despite having the better of the play. They had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock, when seven minutes in Deco supplied a delicate pass for Danny to run through and finish. Those same two players had linked up well in the first half to create a chance for Simao, who was denied by Mozambique goalkeeper Otshudia Lama. The goalscorer turned provider fifteen minutes from time when he squared for Hugo Almeida, and Almeida grabbed a second close to the end when Cristiano Ronaldo's shot was only parried by Lama. For Carvalho (pictured far left) then, it is two full matches completed in a week, with a 45 minutes against Cape Verde to boot. Deco too earned much-needed minutes with his club season ending early, his hour today added to a full game against Cameroon and another 60 against Cape Verde. Ferreira will probably now be questioning whether he will be a starter when Portugal kick off their World Cup campaign against Ivory Coast on June 15. The full-back played only 45 minutes against Cameroon, and 68 against Cape Verde. Manchester United's Nani has been withdrawn from the Portugal squad with a shoulder injury. Benfica's Ruben Amorim replaces him. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2068631,00.html DROGBA BACK IN TRAINING Posted on: Fri 11 Jun 2010 It is the picture all Chelsea and Ivory Coast fans want to see - Didier Drogba returning to training. Less than a week after fracturing his right arm and undergoing emergency surgery, the 32-year-old forward was back out on the pitch yesterday to boost his country's hopes ahead of the World Cup. Wearing a light protective cast, Drogba underwent a light training session in front of supporters, and coach Sven Goran Eriksson is hopeful he will be fit to face Portugal in their opening group game in South Africa on Tuesday. 'If the match had been today or tomorrow, he wouldn't be able to play,' said the former England coach, 'but it's in a few days. He might play.' http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/cd/db/0,,10268~8838093,00.jpg
