What do we do with our players on loan?

As the season enters the final sprint, Chelsea somehow find themselves still
within a shout of the title, and looking very favourably at a runners-up
position. There is already immense speculation about staff changes whether in
management or playing staff. But what of the small army of players we have
placed on loan?

Until Christmas, the one saving grace of a season that seemed to be plunging
down the toilet is that the club was blooding youngsters. Many of us could
have accepted a season that ended below our usual standards of success if it
was clearly considered a year of transition, with an idea of rejuvenating a
squad that has - and continues to have - too many players on the wrong side
of 30. But since Christmas, that ambition appears to have been abandoned.
Chelsea signed two marquee players, and with the exception of the odd
appearance from Josh McEachran (or seeing Ryan Bertand on the bench Saturday)
those youngsters have been edged out of the first team.

On the one hand, several long-term injury victims have returned to health.
The likes of Frank Lampard, Jose Bosingwa, Essien, Alex, Benayoun, Zhirkov
are now more or less eligible. On the other, Chelsea added two players (David
Luiz, Fernando Torres) who were rushed into the first team. The abilities of
the youngsters to get a game were curtailed. So a great number of those
youngsters were sent out on loan: Daniel Sturridge, Patrick Von Aanholt, Gael
Kakuta, Fabio Borini to start with. That`s on top of a legion of players
already on loan (such as Rajkovic and Delac at Vitesse, or Michael Mancienne
at Wolves).

But what does the future hold for these players? Chelsea`s history does not
augur well for them. We have a previous of signing youngsters, and not
bringing them into the first team, usually lending them out as a way of
attracting interest from buyers rather than developing their Chelsea careers
(Nemanja Matic was included in the price when we bought David Luiz). It would
be tempting to suggest that this is because they simply aren`t good enough
for Chelsea, but this is an indictment of the club structures if we have
failed to develop even one youngster.

This needs to change. There are economic reasons for this, but also
regulatory ones. UEFA is more demanding as regards 'homegrown` players, and
Chelsea is going to have to comply with those rules. We cannot keep splashing
out heavy cash for players who are first-team ready and ignore the potential
to develop Chelsea-ready players via our youth system. And we need to do this
on the basis of players that we already have on our books.

Clearly Daniel Sturridge is a prime candidate for inclusion in the first-team
squad. Nicolas Anelka or Didier Drogba might be coming to the end of their
time at Chelsea (or both), Daniel Sturridge has shown, already, on a
highly-successful loan to Bolton, that he is ready to compete in the English
top-flight. Seven goals in nine goals for the Trotters since he joined in
January, these are numbers that one can`t argue with. Sturridge is scoring
more than half of Bolton`s goals at the moment, and has helped take the side
close to a Europa League place. In the process, Sturridge has shown that,
given a chance and consistency, he can take it. Chelsea should find a place
for Sturridge in next season`s squad.

And of the rest? Chelsea needs to have a career development plan whereby
players who make the most of their loans are offered the chance at Chelsea. A
player who does well (Jeffrey Bruma is a good example) needs be nurtured
further. Whether Bruma will fit in the squad, as a central defender, is
another question. We hear that Ryan Bertrand is very highly-rated, to the
extent that Chelsea can sell Yuri Zhirkov as Bertrand will provide the cover.

And what of some of the other players on loan? At Fulham, Kakuta has not
really exploded into contention; his performances have been few and starts
fewer. But he also signed a new contract with Chelsea just before departing
on loan, which suggests that the club has a long-term vision for the player.
Patrick Van Aanholt is already on his third loan spell, and has even lined up
for Chelsea (albeit in an ill-fated Carling Cup game in which he scored). He
has also scored for Leicester, so as an attacking left-back, he seems ideal
as Ashley Cole`s understudy.

Fabio Borini is an enigma. As a striker, you can`t argue with his numbers: 6
goals in 7 games on loan at Swansea. You would think that a player apparently
so highly-rated by the club could be a shoo-in for the first-team. But, by
all accounts, Borini has refused a new contract at Chelsea and is determined
to leave. If so, Chelsea will simply have to try to strike the best deal for
a player who doesn`t see his future in a Chelsea shirt.

Ultimately, Chelsea`s plans for these youngsters will depend on the balance
of the first-team squad. The reason for our disastrous blip from November
until January probably lies in the departure of too many senior players at
once, with the replacements (in the form of youngsters) turning out to be not
as ready as initially considered. We cannot expect that a substantial
proportion of our first-team squad of experienced players can be replaced by
youngsters. However, Chelsea needs to have a plan for, say, one per position
on the pitch. Sturridge as a striker, one of Michael Mancienne, Jeffrey Bruma
or Slobodan Rajkovic as a centreback, Patrick Von Aanholt or Ryan Bertrand as
left-back, Matej Delain goalkeeping role. Josh McEachran for the central midfield. That`s just an idea, depending
on which of our senior players will leave the club over the summer.

What is, however, intolerable is another season during which the majority of
our squad will simply become older at the same time as our own youngsters are
as far as ever from making the transition to the first squad.
下個賽季 不管怎樣 不能讓人接受的就是每個球員都老了一歲 但是年輕球員還是距離
一隊無限的遠
