A video posted on YouTube shows Redknapp rowing with a West Ham supporter at a fans’ forum in 1996. Responding to criticism of teenager Lampard, who is sat alongside him, Redknapp snaps: “I’m telling you now — and I didn’t want to say this in front of him — but he will go right to the very top. “He’s got everything that’s needed to become a top class midfield player. “His attitude is first class, he’s got strength, he can play, he can pass it and he can score goals.“ Redknapp’s assistant manager at the time was former West Ham team-mate Frank Lampard senior, father of the young midfielder. The now QPR boss is also Lampard junior’s uncle by marriage, prompting a suggestion of favouritism by the fan. In front of the small gathering and Lampard’s team-mates Iain Dowie and Marc Rieper, the supporter claims that better midfielders had been allowed to leave the club. He says: “I’d like to ask Harry if he thinks the publicity he’s given young Frank there warrants it because personally I don’t think he’s quite good enough yet. “In the last couple of years you’ve let some good midfielders go for peanuts like Matt Holland and Scott Canham.” Redknapp, obviously irritated, replies: “They definitely wasn’t good enough. He [Lampard] is good enough and he definitely will be good enough. “I let Scott Canham go, he was a good kid and worked very hard. He’s gone to Brentford and can’t get into Brentford’s team. “He’s 21 years of age and I let him go because young Frank’s 17 or 18 and is miles in front of him. “I get paid to make judgments on players. It’s a game of opinions. “I keep the players I want to keep. Young Matt Holland may bounce back and may be First Division, he’s a decent player. “Young Scotty Canham’s a decent player, don’t get me wrong. We offered him a two-year contract and he turned it down. He didnt want to stay here The fan continues to argue with the West Ham boss as Lampard looks on, until Redknapp forces his point home, saying: “I’ll tell you now, you can sit here in front of all these people but I’ll tell you without any shadow of a doubt there will be no comparison with what Frank Lampard will achieve in football and what Scotty Canham will achieve in football. “There is no favouritism and if anything I’m holding him back more. “I’m telling you now — and I didn’t want to say this in front of him — but he will go right to the very top. “He’s got everything that’s needed to become a top class midfield player. “His attitude is first class, he’s got strength, he can play, he can pass it and he can score goals. “I’m telling you, in my opinion I couldn’t be more strong how I feel about him.” -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 111.250.55.138
