Chicago Bulls forward Taj Gibson engaged in contract extension talks

Taj Gibson is one of very few players to which the Chicago Bulls have offered
an olive branch. The same team that allowed the majority of its tough “bench
mob” to scatter elsewhere is engaged in talks to extend Gibson beyond his
rookie contract.

In those talks, an $8 million gap remains between what Gibson and the Bulls
see as a suitable contract offer. Entering his fourth year, Gibson, 27, would
like to know he is set up to play for the Bulls long term before the season
starts Wednesday.

"I'm getting tired of being asked questions about (my extension) and people
worrying about it,” Gibson said, according to The Chicago Tribune. “I just
want to get back to playing basketball, get focused on the season and helping
this team win games."

The Bulls were outbid for backup center Omer Asik, who signed a deal for $25
million with the Rockets over three years. Likewise, Houston used its cap
space to pull Jeremy Lin away from the New York Knicks in free agency.

Even with that threat, the Bulls are not in position to sign Gibson to a deal
that would pay him $10 million annually, the Chicago Tribune notes. Gibson
plays for a team with the combined salaries of Derrick Rose, Luol Deng,
Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer amounting to nearly $60 million in each of the
next two seasons.
