Metro Pastor Charged with Sex Assault

Papillion, NE -- A metro pastor is now charged with 3rd Degree Sexual Assault
of a Child. KMTV first brought you the story in August, when the girl’s
mother filed a protection order against the man.
Sarpy County prosecutors charged 61-year-old Clifton Wells after accusations
he inappropriately touched a 14-year-old girl. Wells was the pastor at the
Church of Jesus Christ in Omaha for more than 20 years. The arrest warrant
comes after a three-month investigation.
The victim's mother Sherri, who we will only identify by her first name, says
she was confident that authorities would hold him responsible for his actions.
“I took that as to be good news because that means he's going to be stopped.
People are going to know about what he's doing,” Sherri explained.
The arrest warrant states that in July, Wells went to Sherri's home to heal
her spiritually. He later gave Sherri's 14-year-old daughter a ride to get a
job application, and to counsel her on behavior issues. Authorities say
while in the car Wells allegedly rubbed the teen's leg, moving his hand
closer to her private area. She resisted and later cried while telling her
mother about the incident.
Wells denied the allegations to investigators. He said he may have hit her
leg, but never consciously rubbed it. Wells said he doesn't fondle children,
and is offended that he's being accused of it.
Investigators talked to at least 2 other women who also felt wells touched
them inappropriately. Sherri hopes it will help her daughter move on though
it will be difficult for her to trust again.
"It wasn't like a ‘he said she said’, there was more kids involved, and who
knows how many," Sherri noted.
If convicted, he faces up to 5 years in prison.
KMTV spoke with Wells' attorney Tuesday evening who said his client denies
the charge.
