[閒聊] 關於 evolution theory 和「適者生存」

我是覺得這個板討論生物學理論很離題，所以推文裡說了兩句就沒再說了。既然
chenjo 有鍥而不捨的科學精神，我當然要響應一下來說清楚。

我不知道台灣是怎麼教 evolution theory 的，適者生存又被講解成什麼樣，但
我是在大陸學生物學和在美國看英文科普文章時都讀到 "survival of the
fittest" 這一觀點的。翻譯成進化論還是演化論在我看來都不太重要，只要懂
得理論的內容就好了。我是理工科的，社會達爾文主義沒有什麼涉獵，這裡就只
談生物學。

為了避免又在中文譯名上糾纏，有爭議的詞下面我就都用英文好了。

大陸的生物學課程對 evolution theory 的教學在我看來沒有什麼錯誤，大致梗
概就是生物表現出的性狀由基因決定，基因會在繁殖下一代時出現隨機的變異，
這變異造成下一代的生物個體之間出現差異，其中適應環境的個體就存活下來，
不適應環境的個體就早早死掉，不能再繁殖。適應環境而存活的個體的下一代繼
續因基因變異造成差異，進一步更適應環境的變化就繼續得以存活而繁殖下一代。
這樣經過很多代的繁衍，結果就是最後存活的個體都是有適應其生存環境的基因
變異的個體，而其它具有不適應環境的基因變異的個體都或早或晚死掉了，這就
是所謂的 survival of the fittest。

Survival of the fittest 這個說法是 Spencer 最早提出沒有錯，但 Darwin
並沒有反對這個說法，而是自己也使用過。據 Wikipedia：

Darwin first used Spencer's new phrase "survival of the fittest" as a 
synonym for "natural selection" in the fifth edition of On the Origin 
of Species, published in 1869. Darwin meant it is a metaphor for "better
adapted for immediate, local environment", not the common inference of
"in the best physical shape". Hence, it is not a scientific description, 
and is both incomplete and misleading.

The phrase "survival of the fittest" is not generally used by modern 
biologists as it does not convey the complex nature of natural
selection, so they prefer and almost exclusively use the latter term
(natural selection). ...

... Darwin wrote on page 6 of The Variation of Animals and Plants under
Domestication published in 1868, "This preservation, during the battle
for life, of varieties which possess any advantage in structure,
constitution, or instinct, I have called Natural Selection; and
Mr. Herbert Spencer has well expressed the same idea by the Survival of 
the Fittest. The term "natural selection" is in some respects a bad one,
as it seems to imply conscious choice; but this will be disregarded
after a little familiarity". Darwin agreed with Alfred Russel Wallace 
that this new phrase - "survival of the fittest" - avoided the 
troublesome anthropomorphism of "selecting", though it "lost the 
analogy between nature's selection and the fanciers'".

由上面這段引文可以看到由于 survival of the fittest 這個詞容易被誤解，
現在生物學家已經不用，而改用 natural selection。你可以說大陸的生物教學
還在用過時的名詞 (進化論和演化論之爭在我看來也是這一類的事情)，應該改
用沒有歧義，現代生物學普遍使用的名詞，這我都同意。但上面也說到 Darwin
自己也讚賞過 survival of the fittest 這個詞，並不能說後來這個詞被濫用，
失去了 Darwin 的本義，就說 evolution theory 沒說 survival of the
fittest。這種說法我是不能同意的。大陸現在的生物學教材不知道用什麼名詞
了，但這裡是兩岸板，如果要討論 evolution theory，最少批評前先了解一下
對方的背景，看看他說這個詞是什麼意思，再說對方「對某某理論理解錯誤」，
似乎比較好一些。

最後說一句，英文 survival of the fittest 這個詞之所以後來被誤用，我覺
得原因之一是 fit 這個形容詞既有適應週邊環境的意思，又有身體健康強壯的
意思。中文如果譯成適者生存，並不像英文那樣容易造成誤解誤用，我覺得除了
不符合現代生物學的慣用術語之外，沒有太大的不妥。
