DETROIT -- Cubs catcher Geovany Soto has known since April
he tested positive for marijuana during the World Baseball
Classic in March, and the knowledge that this would become
public had caused many sleepless nights for the reigning
National League rookie of the year who got off to a
horrible start this season.
''He would never make excuses, that's the kind of guy he
is,'' Cubs assistant general manager Randy Bush said, ''but
I think it has been bothering him.''
Soto was waiting for the International Baseball Federation
to make the announcement weeks ago, but after a series of
delays, he asked the Cubs if he could release the
information himself Thursday. Though Soto, who played for
Puerto Rico in the WBC, will be banned from international
competition for two years, he won't receive any punishment
from Major League Baseball or the Cubs.
''I just feel embarrassed,'' Soto said after the Cubs' 6-5
loss to the Detroit Tigers. ''I'm man enough to do stuff,
I'm man enough to face it. I just want to apologize to the
Cubs organization, my family and the fans most of all. I
just want to put this behind me, and I don't want this to
be a distraction for me or my teammates. I would appreciate
it if this is the last time we talk about it. It's
embarrassing, and I'm trying to put it behind me and move
forward.'' .............
