  The Cubs are close to a three-year deal with Marlon Byrd, according to Ken

  Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). A number of teams have been connected

  to Byrd, including the Braves. Byrd had expressed interest in returning to

  the Rangers, but he wanted a multi-year deal. The terms of his possible Cubs

  deal aren't known yet, but a three-year commitment is significant.

  Byrd is a Type B free agent, so the Rangers will obtain a supplementary

  rounder if the Cubs complete the deal.

  MLB.com's Carrie Muskat tweets that the Cubs have agreed to a three-year

  deal with Byrd and will announce it later today.

  Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports (via Twitter) that

  the Cubs will pay Byrd just $3MM in 2010. He'll earn $5.5MM in 2011 and

  $6.5MM in 2012.


  ESPNChicago's Bruce Levine reports that the deal "is believed to be"

  backloaded. Levine reports that Byrd took a physical in Chicago yesterday.


  Muskat hears that the deal is for $15MM over three years (via

  Twitter). Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune confirms that the deal is for

  three years and $15MM.
