LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Tigers have agreed on a one-year contract worth
$8 million with free agent Johnny Damon, the Free Press learned tonight from
a person familiar with the negotiations.
The contract also includes a no-trade clause. Thus the Tigers,
if they fall out of this year’s playoff race, can’t send Damon to a club
he doesn’t wish to go to.
Damon, 36, must pass a physical for the deal to become official.
It’s not expected the Tigers will announce the signing after Damon passes
the physical. Damon, who has more than 6,000 at-bats as a leadoff hitter,
can fill the Tigers’ void at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. They didn’t have
a proven leadoff hitter after the trade of Curtis Granderson to the Yankees
in December.
And Damon also helps reduce the Tigers’ shortage of left-handed hitting.
Until his signing, the Tigers only everyday left-handed hitter was
switch-hitter Carlos Guillen. Granderson, traded by the Tigers in December,
might replace Damon in left field in New York. Damon apparently will replace
Granderson atop the Tigers’ lineup. But the Tigers also have a vacancy at the
No. 2 spot, and the No. 2 spot is where Damon batted last year when he
clubbed 24 homers while helping the Yankees to the world title.
Another suitor for Damon were the White Sox, but general manager Kenny Williams
told the Free Press today he withdrew his offer because it could not match the
Tigers' proposal.
