Valverde's run at club's saves record on hold KANSAS CITY -- The day after Jose Valverde tied Willie Hernandez's Tigers record for consecutive saves in a season, he was guaranteed to share the mark for at least couple more days. Manager Jim Leyland gave Valverde an off-day on Sunday after he pitched four out of the previous five days. Valverde's save in Saturday night's 4-3 win over the Royals was his 32nd in as many chances this year. It's the longest single-season streak by any Major League reliever since Joakim Soria converted 36 consecutive saves last year, and the longest to begin a season since Brad Lidge saved 41 straight for the Phillies in 2008. Saturday's save was the ninth of Justin Verlander's 16 wins this season that Valverde has closed. Understandably, Verlander had a good amount of praise for what Valverde has accomplished. "It's amazing," Verlander said. "You look at his body of work, and they're usually not easy saves. A lot of them are one-run games." Leyland was asked on Saturday about similarities between Valverde and Hernandez. "I guess the fact that they were both really good under pressure," Leyland said. "Obviously, one of them's left [handed] and one's right. But if I remember right, [Hernandez] had a good screwball and a changeup. There's similarities in the jobs getting done, that's for sure." 單季第一名當然是幹爺2003年的連續55場救援成功 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.223.101.131
