The Tigers have hired a defensive coordinator — not a sabermetrician — in
Matt Martin.

The Tigers also announced three more additions to Brad Ausmus’ coaching
staff Monday: Wally Joyner as hitting coach, Mick Billmeyer as bullpen coach
and Omar Vizquel as first base/infield/baserunning coach.

The Tigers are in the process of hiring an assistant hitting coach, the last
position needed to complete Ausmus’ coaching staff.

Ausmus said Monday that Martin will serve a jack-of-all-trades role. Ausmus
said other teams have employed people in similar roles in the past.

Martin’s primary duties will include coordinating video and advance scouting
reports, making sure the infielders and outfielders are on the same page as
pitchers when it comes to defensive positioning.

“It’s an extra set of baseball eyes,” Ausmus said. “The plan right now
during games, and this may change, is that he’ll be upstairs with more of a
bird’s-eye (view).

“When you’re sitting in the dugout a lot of times, you can’t tell exactly
where the fielders are in comparison with how it lines up with home plate
because you’re looking at an angle. Rather than waiting two or three days
and seeing a replay and realizing the guy was out of position, we’ll know
that night that adjustments need to be made.”

Ausmus made it clear that Martin is a guy with a long baseball background. He
was not brought in to comb over advanced metrics.

“He’s a baseball guy,” Ausmus said. “He’s not a number-crunching guy.
His background is playing and coaching in the minor leagues.

“He’s not a sabermetrician.”

During spring training, Ausmus said Martin will be “an assistant infield
instructor to Omar Vizquel.”

“He’ll help Omar with any of the infielders, any of the baserunning or
bunting during spring training,” Ausmus said. “Once the season begins, he’
ll be in uniform up until game time.”

Martin has 18 years of experience as a minor league coach, manager or
instructor. He served as a Double-A hitting coach, roving instructor and
manager in the Tigers organization in 1998-2003.

Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said he is pleased with
the way the coaching staff has come together.

“Mick Billmeyer has been highly regarded for years with the Phillies
organization and comes highly recommended,” Dombrowski said.

He added that Dave Clark, previously announced as the third-base coach, is a
“quality baseball man” who has coached third base before and will work with
the outfielders.

“Then you have Omar Vizquel at first base,” Dombrowski said. “We needed
his knowledge of the game, his infield play, his ability to instruct in that
regard. He was also a good baserunner and he was always an aggressive, upbeat
guy.”

Dombrowski said he met with Joyner and came away impressed. “I know he’s a
very highly regarded individual,” Dombrowski said.

SIGNING: The Tigers confirmed tonight they have signed catcher Ronny Paulino
to a minor-league deal. He has played for four major-league teams since 2012,
most recently with Baltimore in 2012. He played 13 games with the Mud Hens
last season, hitting .267.
