I've left off all the CFLAGS in my /etc/make.conf and it worked!  :)

Thanks for the help.  (It's hard to believe that -O2 -pipe generates 
incorrect code... wow.)

Can I assume that putting CCVER=gcc34 in my make.conf is the same as 
using "env CCVER=gcc34"  when doing a make world?
