More info which might help finding the bug: while running, the load average
is exactly and consistently 1.00 despite not doing anything. The weird thing
is that I can then run "gdb /usr/sbin/pppd <pid>" and attach to pppd, but
then everything becomes normal: load & cpu usage drop to ~0 with a perfectly
usable connection, despite a STOP label for the process in top. Well,...

PS. The same HW runs OK under Debian testing.
