Either you make things more confusing for the people trying to upgrade, or you conditionalize the source code so it works with older header files. Given the choice I will choose to conditionalize the source. The bootstrapped program stage in the buildworld is designed to minimize the number of programs that actually need this sort of conditionalization and to then build the rest of the system with the 'latest' header files. It's not really our fault that the designers of programs like gzip, and even 'cp', insist on cluttering the programs up with features that require the latest libraries. -Matt
