:that leaves the question why I have the same symptom (endless db> prompt 
:loop) on another machine with keyboard connected when I 'boot -d' it. It 
:seems as if the keyboard is not being correctly detected at this point, 
:even though it works fine later on (e.g. I can break into ddb then etc.).

    I think you are right, the keyboard simply isn't being detected
    early enough for boot -d... but virtually nobody uses boot -d so it
    isn't on my hot list.  You are welcome to have a go at tracking it
    down, though.
