If ifconfig_vke0 is set to DHCP, it never gets past there. Otherwise it makes it into multiple-user mode and I can see the login: prompt (but of course I can't type in anything). The vkernel responds to some signals. If I run `pkill -TERM kernel', vkernel prints 'Caught SIGTERM from host system. Shutting down...' message, but it gets stuck at somewhere and I never see `The operating system has halted.' message. It also responds to SIGQUIT, so pressing ctrl+\ makes it drop into DDB (depending on the configuration of the terminal), and I can type in the command there.
