:KDE is pretty damn good and impressively fast on dragonflybsd. I think this 
:has something to do with the new hooks in vfs not grokking the fact that NFS 
:has no real device.

    Nah.  It's because our VFS/IO caching is a whole lot better then linux's,
    and our NFS is also a whole lot better (especially with the negative
    name caching I added a few months ago).
