From there, I'd probably cross-check against the 'live' netif/em driver to see any differences in this known-working older version that look like they should be moved into the e1000/em copy, then retry, repeat, etc. until either you have a working driver or you quit :D of course I'm sure the usual suspects will be happy to answer questions should you happen on them.
