Okay,
I've made a new version of my patch. I've added support for 15 and 24
bit modes (in addition to the 16 and 32 bit support). Also, I've done
some cleanup and restructuring work.

If there are no objections this patch could be committed. I'd still
classify it as somewhat experimental since there are issues with some
graphics adapters (I'm currently collecting the problems folks are
reporting). Also, some screen savers have problems and the mouse pointer
produces drawing glitches when selecting text.
