Dear Mr.Lee

Hi, I am a college student from Taiwan and now majors in German. Recently I
developed interest in Interaction Design and look forward to
apply IxD graduate program after I graduate from college. CMU and SVA are all
in my consideration.

However, as a student with zero design background, I am not sure where to
start. Would you suggest what kind of technical skills and knowledge I should
prepare myself before I apply? (For example, what computer programs should I
learn or others, etc.) Also, is it possible to request to see the portfolio
examples from the past applicants? Do you have any advice on making portfolio?

Hello Sophie,

Nice to meet you. I'm Chongho Lee, second-year interaction design graduate
student at CMU school of design.
I hope I can answer the question you have to the best of my knowledge.

First of all, I don't have a design background either. I majored in English
literature and Entertainment Technology before coming to design school. As
long as you have a very clear goal of why you want to pursue interaction
design major, that should be enough to convince the admission committee. Out
of 8 interaction design majors at my year, there are only 2 of them whose
background is design. One thing to note is that most of other students have
either engineering or computer science background.

Regarding programming skills, I strongly recommend you build up a strong
skill in HTML/CSS/Javascript and that really matters when you look for jobs
later. Other than that, you might want to practice Flash since these days in
order to make animated transition between user interfaces in an interactive
prototype.

But I think more than anything else the companies would look for User
Interface design skill from you, so when you have time, I recommend you
practice drawing Web / Mobile user interface wireframes a lot and also make
hi-fi art assets with Photoshop. I think Photoshop and Illustrator skills are
most important ones to have, more than programming skills.

Regarding portfolio websites, you can take a look at mine for example
(chongholee.com) but it's not the best portfolio website out there. I didn't
make the website by myself and instead bought a paid service called Cargo
Collective, but you might as well make your own website. I'm going to do that
in a couple of weeks.
