People did what they could. Devin Harris is an NBA star with no connection to
Rutgers, but he convinced the Nets to donate $75,000 through his “34 Ways to
Assist Foundation.”

“It was just more of me being a part of the New Jersey community now,”
 Harris said from Chicago yesterday. “He’s a kid who stayed home, who’s
playing football for his home school, so we wanted to step in and say, ‘We
take care of our community.’

The Pistons were in Newark the night Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti
accepted that check. The next day he received a phone call. It was Tracy
McGrady. He saw the ceremony taking place that night and, when he got home,
did an internet search on LeGrand. He decided to write a check for $20,000
himself.
