D-backs deal Garland to Dodgers

Right-hander heading to LA for player to be named

LOS ANGELES -- The D-backs on Monday traded right-hander Jon Garland to the
Dodgers in exchange for a player to be named.

Garland, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, was 8-11 with a
4.29 ERA in 27 starts for the D-backs this year.

By being traded prior to the midnight ET deadline, Garland is eligible to be
on the Dodgers' postseason roster should they qualify for the playoffs.

The Dodgers are in need of starting-pitching depth even with the possible
return of Hiroki Kuroda later this week. Garland has been a dependable
innings eater during parts of his 10 seasons. He threw at least 190 innings
from 2002-08 and is on pace to do so again this year.

Garland, 29, had a salary of $6.25 million this season with a mutual option
at $10 million for next year. If Garland chooses not to exercise the option,
is owed $1 million. If the Dodgers, choose not to exercise the option, they
will owe him a $2.5 million buyout.
