Cody Wheeler isn't expecting a lot from his rookie season of pro baseball,
but he's eager to get started.
The Spotsylvania County native will report to Yakima (Wash.) Saturday to join
the Arizona Diamondbacks' Class-A farm team after signing with the club on
Tuesday. Wheeler was Arizona's fifth-round draft pick two weeks ago after a
stellar pitching career at Coastal Carolina University.
"I'm a little excited, a little nervous," Wheeler said yesterday. "I'm going
to a team that's already started, that's already got some guys in the mix.
I'm coming in a little late, but I'm excited to get up there and show them
what I can do."
Wheeler, a left-hander, was 28-1 at Coastal Carolina. He said his signing
bonus was around $170,000.
