Despite this imbalance, the Dodgers did post a winning record, landing in 2nd place in the NL West with an 85-77 record. They finished 15.5 games behind a SF Giants team whose pitching, though strong, was not nearly as good as the Dodgers' at 3.43 runs allowed per game. The difference was in the offense. Though the Giants tallied only a few more runs than the typical team, their average of 4.69 runs scored per game gave them enough separation from the pitching staff to give them a chance to win on most nights. The Dodgers' average of 3.54 runs scored per game did not offer them the same benefit. They were shut out 13 times, the most in NL, and were limited to 1 run a major league-leading 27 times. The Dodgers pitched 17 shutouts that year, but those shutouts didn't necessarily coincide with the nights of offense had only 1 run in it----the Dodgers were only 2-25 when scoring just once.
