The genealogy of the Winkelrieds of Unterwalden has been studied meticulously,
and while an "Erni Winkelried" or "Arnold Winkelried" seems to have lived at
that time, he was also alive and well after the battle: he was plaintiff in a
lawsuit in Stans in 1389, and acted as Landamman (chief magistrate) of
Unterwalden in 1417.
溫特華登 (下森林) 的溫科理德氏族譜已經過多年的詳細研究。雖然確有一位阿尼
或是阿諾‧溫科理德先生活在那個時代，但是他在戰後還活得好好的：戰役的之後
三年 (1389) 他還在史坦思鎮告別人。在 1417 年, 他並曾出任 [譯註：英文與德
文原文均無法判讀是正常出任或代理] 溫特華登的司法官。
The legend may be plausible if we assume he was wearing armour. The
infantryman's armour of that day consisted of mail haubergeon and thick
gambeson worn underneath. It is possible to get spears stuck on mail
without piercing it; and if Arnold had then dived on ground and pressed
the spears down, he could well have created a breach in the phalanx for
his comrades-in-arms to attack - without him getting killed. That could
explain why a man of that name would exist after the battle alive - the
spears would just get stuck on his armour but the armour had saved his life.
如果他當時身披重鎧，傳說倒不無可能是事實。當時的步兵甲包括鎖鏈甲或是片甲
綴成的鐵衣，底下還搭配厚重的羊毛或是麻布的衣服作為第二層保護。矛尖有可能
卡在護甲上而沒有戳穿。如果阿諾是俯衝下地，並把附近的矛頭都向下壓，他確實
有可能替同伴在方陣上打開缺口而不必犧牲生命。至少，這解釋了為什麼在戰役結
束之後相同姓名的人還活著 -- 他確實被亂槍環刺，但是重甲保住了他的老命。
