標題[經驗] Some courses for pursuit of economics(I)
時間Sun Jan 18 14:05:14 2009
Although it is often heard that what to learn to
study economics in the graduate school, and there
are many suggestions, I, as a MA students in NTU,
would recommand those:
Basics (helpful for your studying in MA):
1. Programming ability like C++
A familiarity of a computer program helps you master Stata, SAS or Matlab,
for it provides you an understanding of the language of a computer. An
ability to communicate with your PC nowaday becomes indispensable when you
have to do either empirical or theoretical research (e.g., calibration in
macro.) in any field.
A systematic way to learn a program is beneficial in that one can
understand the key ideas of programming at one time (self-study on STATA,
e.g., would not show you what a loop is when you only need OLS.) There
was a story that a Ph D. condidate found if he had only relied on
Matlab for his thesis, he would have a vacation for two months to wait
his program to end. He introduced C++ into his program, and shortened his
time to have the degree.
2. Linear algebra/ Ordinary differential equation and partial differential
equation (ODE & PDE).
The quickest way to learn mathematics may be to learn them from the college
of science, the college of engineering, or the college of electronic
engineering and information. For example, a sequence of engineering
mathematics divided by three semesters includes: linear algebra for one, ODE
and PDE for another, and complex function theory for the other. Though
mathematics wont come as handy as programming, I recommand those for they are
so much fundamental disciplines that you should take them as your general
education like the role played by calculus.
In fact, one should always try to learn linear algebra first, since we
used to live in a linearized world. Linear algebra gives a good view
on computing multivariate calculus. Also when one writes a program by Matlab
or Gauss, an understanding of matrix operations can be handy. Not to mention
it certainly has a role in econometric theory!
3. Advanced statistics or mathematical statistics in the equivalent level.
All geniuses should let go this part.
