Should you put a comma before because? She was late, because there was lots
of traffic. (I was taught that this was incorrect, but have seen several
textbooks use it this way recently.)

It depends on whether the subordinate statement is important.
eg
Q - Why was she late?
A - She was late because there was lots of traffic.
eg
Q - Was she early or late?
A - She was late, because there was lots of traffic.
It might help you to consider that a comma represents a pause in speaking.
Try saying your senetnce aloud, and see if you pause. (I know this is not
easy if English is not your native language. )
