: Objective: This study aimed to examine how many elderly people (ages over 55
: years) suffered from Typhoon Morakot develop posttraumatic disorder (PTSD)
: and major depressive disorder (MDD) and which severity and prevalence.
The aim of this study is to investigate the severity and prevalance
of the post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) developed in
elderly people who suffered from the Typhoon Morakot in 2009.
: Methods: Subject s (n=122) who selected from four communities damaged by
: Typhoon Morakot and all the subjects’ age are over 55 years that have been
: experience typhoon exposure. The assessment tools we used include Center for
Subjects (n=122) were selected from four communities suffering various
levels of damages caused by Typhoon Morakot. The subjects are all above
55 years of age.
: Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and _____. The information we
: obtained from subjects includes demographic characteristics; severity of
: posttraumatic stress symptoms and MDD; general mental health; extent of
: typhoon exposure.
CES-D and ---- were used in the study. Data collected from the subjects
include demographic characteristics, severity of PTSD and MDD, general
mental health and the extent of typhoon exposure.
: Results: There were 122 cases interviewed in a half year, and there are 40
: cases (32.7%) meet the criteria of PTSD and 53 cases (43.4%) with MDD, who
: non PTSD and non MDD are 47 cases (38.5%).
A total of 122 cases have been interviewed within a period of six months.
Among the cases, 40 (32.7%) and 53 (43.4%) met the criteria of PTSD
and MDD, respectively. Forty-seven cases (38.5%) don't match either PTSD
or MDD.
: Conclusion: The results indicated: Typhoon Morakot brought great impact on
: elderly survivors not only psychological but also quality of life. Besides
: rebuilding the economy of those communities, providing appropriate
: psychological health care is indeed important.
The results indicate that Typhoon Morakot has a significant impact
on elder survivors, both psychologically and economically. Thus appropriate
psychological care may be as important as the physical rebuild.
