[文法] in the U.S.A

第一次在貴版發表文章
如有違反版規請多指教
我想請問關於文法的問題

今天看到一篇文章"I was born in the U.S.A."
以及 I was born in the United States"

這時候有人問我為什麼要加"the"
因為以前學過例如 This was made in U.S.A.
                                ^^^
或者是 I was born in Taiwan. 就不需要加the

到底是什麼原因加了the呢?
以及是否可以省略不加?
加的用意是什麼??
上網google找不到答案
想請教版上的高手能回答我這相當基礎的問題
