我個人的看法是
There are pictures on the wall 牆壁上有畫
這句主要在敘述牆上有畫這件事情，至於數量多少則不是重點
所以文法和講話的邏輯上 第一句是正確的
而第二句There are not pictures on the wall 牆壁上的不是畫
以文法來看 不能說他錯
但以講話的邏輯來看，意思並不算很正確
要看當時的對話情況
如果甲看到牆壁上掛了一些看起來像畫的東西而問：Are there pictures on the wall?
乙回答：No, there are not pictures on the wall.
這種情況下在文法和講話的邏輯上都沒有錯
但是如果單單講There are not pictures on the wall 聽起來就會怪怪的
