標題[文法] and 和but 的問題

我知道 and和but是連接詞，一個是連接意思相同
另一是連接反義的連接詞
不過下面一個題目是國中的考題，請各位高手幫我看看
Eric is eating apples in the living room,
______ Cleo is eating oranges there.
標準答案是 but, 不過我覺得 and 也是可以。
不知我的看法對不對?
