我後來覺得 there are 真是有點怪，再仔細回去查，發現有個問題：
lot 到底算不算集合名詞 (collective noun)?
因為有集合名詞時，以該集合為主詞
如 There is a gaggle of geese 那裏有一群鵝，"群" (gaggle) 為單數主詞
be 動詞為 is
回朔原例句 2：There are going to be a lot of students in the classroom.
如果 lot 為集合名詞，那 lot 會變成主詞，原句自然要變成 There is
如果 lot 為形容詞，那 students 為主詞，原句則仍為 There are
到底原句該是 there is 還是 there are，取決於 lot 是形容詞還是集合名詞
再往下挖，發現 lot 是兩者通用！ [真是香蕉你個芭樂]
lot 當一般集合名詞時，譯為"群"、"組"、"批"
例：the cups will be divided into 4 lots, each lot of cups is to be
auctioned separately.
[杯子將分成4批，每批分別拍賣]
用在股票時，台灣之"張" (也就是1000股) 英譯為 lot
lot 當作形容詞時直接等於 many
例：I have a lot of bananas = I have many bananas.
而且這形容詞還有複數! (根本就是名詞來濫竽充數的嘛~)
例: I have lots of bananas = I have many bananas.
再更仔細看一點，發現 lot 當集合名詞時會避 a lot 不用，而改用 each 或其他詞
來做 lot 的冠詞；其他集合名詞沒這避諱
a gaggle of geese
a pride of lions 但是
one lot of cups to be auctioned 不是 a lot of cups to be auctioned
lot 當形容詞 (=many) 時則僅用 a lot 或 lots
這是全英語系唯一有單複數的形容詞吧!! 而且單複數意義完全一樣 XD 根本就是來亂的
所以回到原句
There are going to be a lot of students in the classroom.
A lot 為形容詞 (= many) 所以正解仍為 d大的 ARE
但希望原po不要直接忽略了集合名詞的存在
因為我如果不用 lot 而用 group
There are going to be a group of students in the classroom 就會錯
讓我想到當年寫作文時狀況百出，問教授英語文法為何例外那麼多
教授回答：
