[請益] 幾個疑問..

大家好，想請教以下幾個問題~

1. 有位母親想讓小六的兒子去參加某種考試，只要語文或數學的考試成績通過標準，
   就可以參加大學的暑期計畫，但是兒子說不想參加；於是母親對友人說：
   I know that Dylan would qualify in math
   but he says he doesn't want to sit for the test.
   This is crazy because the school wouldn't even know his score 
   and if he makes it and enters the program
   it would look great on his transcript.

   乍看之下，原本覺得這裡的 the school wouldn't even know his score 是指
   a-"學校根本不知道他的成績有多好" (好到可以去參加考試、通過標準)，
   可是想一想又覺得，老師應該都很清楚優秀學生的能力吧，
   而且從動詞的時態看起來，這句的意思似乎是指
   b-"就算他去考試，校方也不會知道他的成績"
   但是這樣子的意思，放進整個段落裡，又好像怪怪的...

   請問，這句話的意思到底是a，是b，還是根本就是c呢... (我不知道c是什麼意思..)


2. 前文提到孩子剛開始學某件事情的時候，可能很努力卻表現不理想，
   而老師給的評語也不夠持平，可能過度讚美或過度貶抑，但是如果父母--
   If you can look at your children's early efforts and uneven report cards
   calmly,
   you'll see how they are progressing through the hard business of thinking
   and growing.

   請問最後一句應該怎麼拆？是
   you'll see how they are progressing through [thinking and growing]，還是
   you'll see how they are [progressing through thinking] and growing 呢？

   (我覺得好像兩句都通，不知道一般遇到這種情形該如何判斷呢？)


3. 前文提到，身教重於言教，尊重父母、下一代才會懂得尊重我們。但接著又說：
   To be fair, it's not always easy to demonstrate respect for our parents
   even if we want to. We aren't the blacksmith, son of a blacksmith,
   so they can't teach us their trade. 
   Nor do we necesarily see them very often.
   Many older people are independent and live far away;
   they have pension plans, condos in retirement communities, and
   enough money for their medical care.

   "We aren't the blacksmith, son of a blacksmith,
    so they can't teach us their trade." 這句話，
   從文法來看怪怪的，
   雖然大概猜得出作者原本要表達什麼意思，但仔細看還是覺得... 句子很怪...


4. (沒有前文)
   My father delights me with tales about selling men's suits
   at Saks 34th Street (百貨公司)
   along with the older sales men: Mr. Gold, Mr. Diamond, Mr. Silver, and
   Mr. Seltzer.
   我想這裡的 Mr. Gold, Mr. Diamond, Mr. Silver
   應該是指銷售成績頂尖的超級業務員，
   但是 Mr. Seltzer...?? 這應該是玩笑話吧，
   但這個玩笑的意思是... 那位 Mr. Seltzer 就是文中的 "我父親" 嗎？？


5. Teaching children to honor adults in difficult situations is
   good preparation for learning to remain calm with
   the overwrought classroom teacher
   or the boorish boss who may show up down the line.

   請問這裡的 line 是指生產線嗎？(隨時會在生產線旁出現的老闆？)


6. 前文提到教導小孩禮貌，譬如朋友來家裡玩時，要去門口迎接對方。接下來提到：
   "二歲至五歲的稚齡孩子玩耍時，常常會以吵架收場。
    It seems to make it easier to say good-bye if you're convinced that
    your friend is really an enemy.
    Give warning here, too, by telling both children,
    'it's time to start cleaning up, Sammy's mom will be here soon
     and you will need to see him to the door' ".

    It seems... 這句話，應該是說一旦吵架，兩個小孩就都不會玩得停不下來了。
    但是為什麼是提醒兩個孩子：Sammy的媽媽快來了，你們兩個得去門口 see "him" 呢？
    這是筆誤嗎？(作者只是在這裡舉例，前面並沒有在任何地方提及Sammy或他媽媽)。


7. Little Kayla is overtaxed, so her mom is off to the library to do research
   for the Hopi Indian social studies project
   while Kayla is at her dance class.

   請問這裡的 "off"，只是指 "去"的意思，還是有 "(工作)請假" 的意思呢？
