In academic writing, it is always better to use direct and formal negative
words.
Don’t say: His research on the Taiwanese writing system was discontinued due to
not much money.
Say: His research on the Taiwanese writing system was discontinued due to
little money.

Informal: Not many Formal: Few
***************************************************************************
Better to say: His research on the Taiwanese writing system was discontinued
due to insufficient funds.
