先姑且不論現在式在這樣的句子中不太成立（用過去式更好）。
My father, who has a pipe in his mouth, is in deep thought.
^^^^^^^常常可以做with（介係詞：擁有、帶有）解
所以"with"本是從這樣的句子變來的。
至於原句my father和a pipe in his mouth，是從兩個子句結合而來的。
My father is in deep thought.
A pipe is in his mouth.
可以先看成是這樣：
My father─a pipe is in his mouth─is in deep thought.
想用雙破折號（等同括號）補充說明此時爸爸嘴裡叼根煙斗，
"My father is in deep thought"是主要句子。
雙破折號中的子句是獨立於"My father..."主句之外的，所以可以完整呈現，
但如果我們想把破折號去掉，改為逗號，就會變成：
My father, a pipe is in his mouth, is in deep thought.
根據英文句法，一個基本句子不能有兩個動詞（兩個is），
至少得把兩個逗號中的句子改為「獨立分詞構句」：
My father, a pipe being in his mouth, is in deep thought.
而由於be動詞的性質（基本上只有語法功能，沒有實質意義），
常常可以省略，所以簡化成：
My father, a pipe in his mouth, is in deep thought.
這樣稍微了解了嗎？
