Find 屬連綴動詞，接 V-ing 表示狀態：
一、發現某事或是某人的狀態

例句：Often he found her quietly weeping alone.
二、經驗或是事實
(experience: to have the experience of discovering that something
happens or is true)
例句：I think you'll find more women entering the film business now.
三、你的例句
They found the man lying on the road.
此句的句意，比較接近第一點：發現某人的狀態。因此會接上 V-ing 表示"狀態"。
如果要加上 that 為連接詞，句子應該為：
They found that the man was lying on the road.
