我對於句中出現 be they 的意義有疑問很久了
後來在網路上看到有人回答
1. be they = whether they are (thar回復 @ http://ppt.cc/tMSI)
(=無論他們是)
e.g. ... the work of great artists was sufficient recommendation
be they jew, christian or muslim.

這樣的意義解釋我很能理解並接受
[第一層次Q] 但我的問題在於為什麼句型可以這樣變?
再查發現，有人說這是因為它作為假設語氣(Subjunctive mood)的倒裝

假設語氣的倒裝規則我也熟悉
我的理解，此多以"if"為開頭的句子為原本的子句，再進行倒裝
[第二層次Q] 但我不懂為什麼 "無論..."也是屬於假設語氣?
我知道 wether與if 作為 "無論"意義時，在某些條件下可以互換
但只因wether可替換成if，即便不是假設語氣(我認為至少不是典型的假設)，就可倒裝?
還是使用"無論"意義時，本來就屬一種假設語氣?
[第三層次Q] 就算是因為假設語氣而倒裝，為什麼是用"be"
如果是採 be they = whether they are，倒裝應該改成 are they?
(e.g. If I am a good student, I can get a lollipop.
= Am I a good student, I can get a lollipop. )
如果是採 be they = whether they might be 的解釋，似乎比較能理解
但這又和我知道的倒裝規則有別
是 whether they might be --> (might) be they ?
(這應該和 (May) God bless you. 無關吧?)

希望答案不是"就長久演變來的習慣用法" (雖然是好像也只能認了...)
