中國茶業在19世紀末面臨了英屬印度與錫蘭茶業的強烈競爭,過去史學界認為中國茶業衰
頹的原因,是因為不敵英國的大資本茶園,與科學化經營模式。本文認為除此之外,還得
加入英國長期以來的博物學研究,以及在域外進行科學調查,蒐集知識的傳統。這點可以
透過植物獵人福瓊(Robert Fortune)從中國將茶樹移植到印度的事蹟,來將這段歷史說得
更為明白。福瓊為了得到茶籽,剃髮易服喬裝成中國人,潛入不許洋人進入的內地,偷偷
將茶籽運出中國。他並且發現烏茶與綠茶的不同,是因為製程不同,跟茶樹種類無關。雖
然英國東印度公司過去就曾經派人蒐集茶籽與茶苗,福瓊卻是第一個完美達成任務的。行
動溫室的發明,正是福瓊成功的關鍵。

The Chinese tea businesses faced strong competition of British India and Sri
Lanka in the end of 19th century. Some historians believed that large capital
tea plantations and scientific business model were the main reasons which had
caused China failure. However, we should consider the British tradition of
the natural history research and scientific investigation abroad and
knowledge collection. This paper examined the story of tea transplantation
from China to India by Robert Fortune, the plant hunter, which story can
explain why British beat China in the international tea markets .Fortune
disguised himself as a Chinese merchant and sneaked into the forbidden
territory that foreigner were not allowed in. He transplanted lots of tea
seedlings and seeds successfully to Gardens in India, and found what cause
difference between green tea and black tea is not about tea species but
procedure. Although British East India Company sent spys to China before, but
Fortune was the only one who had done it. A portable greenhouse is the key
that why Fortune succeeded.
