這句話的動詞：asked
這句話的受詞有兩個：
01. John
02. whether he had read Melville's Moby Dick in high school
不能選what的原因在於，he had read Melville's Moby Dick in high school
這句話已經有完整的主詞、動詞與受詞。
而what = the thing which ，若將 the thing which 代進原句，會發現
which 沒有適當的文法位置；換句話說，因為 he had read Melville's Moby Dick
in high school，沒有任何部位被省略，沒有必須用 which 的地方。
給你幾句 what 的句子，你都可以代進 the thing which 想想，順便琢磨這樣
的句子結構。
01. Show me what you bought.
02. I believe what he told me.
03. What he did was morally wrong.
