標題[Mind] Memory

Memory is a magic word. You can sense it, but you can't feel it. It's in
your mind, but you are not sure if it is true or something made up. Have you
ever thought about your memories were all fictitious stories someone told you
to deceive you? I did, but I was not sure if I was right. Maybe I just over-
reacted to this lexicon and its extended meanings, but a game I played few
weeks ago reminded me of the intriguing subject.
The game is called Final Fantacy VII. I believe some of you might have
played it before. The storyline is perfect and plots abundant. Back then the
protagonist Cloud was a kid, weird and aloof. He liked a girl at his age named
Tifa, but somehow he couldn't catch her attention because she had her circle of
friends. Being excluded from the circle, Cloud felt dejected and useless, until
one day he believed if he could join the SOILDER, the most powerful military
organization in that world, he could be strong and have everyone's eyes on him.
The news spreaded fast and Tifa noticed him at last, expecting him to come back
with the highest rank in SOILDER. However, Cloud didn't make himself even
noticed in SOILDER, but returned to his village asserting his fake identity of
SOILDER that he couldn't achieve. As the story go on, Cloud had been blended
into the memory he made up himself, and believed he was of the highest rank of
SOILDER without any doubt. His identity lasted for a while until his colleage
appeared and gave signs of his past. Cloud started to doubt his realness,
worrying if he did not exist in the past, what else did? His sanity finally
fell apart and he could not piece each of them back to normal. In other words,
he was lost in his split ego.
Of course the story doesn't end here and I can tell you Tifa save him in the
rest part of the story. This image refrains in the movie Butterfly Effect I
saw several months ago. The movie is about a man, who suffers from slight
amnesia, finding himself able to recover his lost part of memory by reading his
diary recording his lost part, and then change his future (or presence). The
point is if he can recreate his memory, will the word memory mean anything?
From both FF VII and Butterfly Effect, I find memory untrustworthy and
unreliable, in particular with the part when you can hardly remember, but
people tell you that did exist. Can there be the possibility that people create
the memory for you, or twist, distort, disfigure so you fill the blank of your
memory with everything people say, so you can assure yourself with true
existence of yourself? I don't know, but I do know when memory is created by
at least two people, the lost part can be refilled by another person. However,
who can you really trust? Do those memories really exist?

I don't know if I made it too long or put them in an understandable way, but I
will appreciate any share of their feelings about this. :)
