[Talk] How to have conversation with foreigner with heavy accent?

There is a foreign student come to our lab today.
He has a very heavy accent that me and my friends can recognize
only a few words he say. In fact, althrough my English is not so
well too, I think his English is more poor than me. This make us
hard to have conversation for more than two minutes....
I think many people may have already met this situation before,
so I'm here to ask any positive suggestion.

Thanks a lot.

ps: although it is the first time we met each other, we have used
    pen and paper to "talk".....
