[Talk] To hard to read english book

hi,
i have some question to ask everybody in this board.
sometime, i try to read some english book, like fiction, or magazine,
but i find that the english often have many phrase i can't understand.
and it often have some significance in it,etc. a joke, a pun...
how do you improve the english on this session?
can any tell me? i have very pool english,so that i feel losing heart sometime...
