: Hello, everyone...
: I'm a student, studying in US. I'm not good at speaking English, so I'm always afraid to speak to people.
: I would like to ask about this...
: How can I do? How should I do? @___@
: Thanks~
I decided to reply your post instead of just appending.
First of all, people who have studied abroad almost inevitably have better
English proficiency than others. I think this has to do with the all-English
environment where you MUST speak out (in english) to survive. My experience;
friends that have spent a summer in US can have substantial improvement in
in English abilities. The most bizzare case is a friend who spent one month
in the States.... at the age of FOUR, and now he speaks excellent English!
So just give it a try; you'll be surprised by the results. And second, don't
be afraid of making mistakes. I can understand how Chinese people may feel
shy about speaking English in public, but hey, you're in the States-- a
foreign country! Think about it, even if they laugh at your (English)
mistakes, you'll probably never meet them again after you come back to TW.
The way I see it, you could choose either to: (1) Be shy -> talk to no
one -> come back to TW with bad English and no friends. or (2) Make mistakes
-> improved English -> friends or no friends, it's already better than the
first scenerio!
Try taking chances; make some stupid mistakes you would not make in
TW. And if you don't like the audience's reation, just walk away. Making
mistakes is a privilege of living in a foreign country. What's more, they
don't even EXPECT you to speak perfect English. You have nothing to lose!
