It's sad but true that McGregor's career trajectory demands the move. (And
maybe Law's real affront was neglecting to call Jerry Bruckheimer.) It's
happier news that The Island doesn't suck. Though it initially positions
his character as a straight-up action hero, the film ends up giving the
actor all kinds of opportunity to play around. By making a mockery of the
heroic poses, McGregor gives them some vitality. Whether the movie takes
him to another level of stardom hardly seems to matter to him -- he seems
far more interested in global motorcycle treks (as documented in the series
and book Long Way Round) and spending time with his kids (who, in another
gesture of solid-bloke-ness, he won't let be photographed by the media).
Is there anyone else working in Hollywood who's as likely to buy you a
pint? All those real movie stars aren't half as useful as he is.
