Starlet versus Scarlett
by Chitra Ramaswamy
Hayley Atwell is nothing like Keira Knightley. Or Scarlett Johansson. The
24-year-old British actress may have been compared to both starlets but she
is more intriguing than either of them.
Perhaps that is why Woody Allen, who made his first two London-based films
Scoop and Match Point with Johansson, decided to replace her with Atwell when
it came to his third British feature. Perhaps that is why Atwell's first
foray on to the silver screen sees her starring alongside Ewan McGregor and
Colin Farrell. Perhaps that is why, barely out of drama school, she has
already acted at the National Theatre and the RSC and has worked with actors
such as Vanessa Redgrave, Tim Piggot-Smith and Imelda Staunton.
(...)
When she auditioned in London for Allen's latest UK project, she walked out
thinking, "Oh God, that was terrible. Oh well, move on." A week later her
agent called saying that Allen, apparently captivated by her "boldness and
confidence", wanted to meet her in New York that very weekend. "On the plane,
Match Point was playing and it couldn't have been more symbolic," she
recalls, describing Allen as "charming and shy". Later that day, after their
meeting, she was offered the lead as Ewan McGregor's love interest in the
upcoming Cassandra's Dream.
It was "madness", says Atwell, referring to last summer's shoot in London and
Brighton with McGregor and Colin Farrell. "There was so many paparazzi around
and so many screaming fans. We kept having to stop in the middle of a take
because they were chanting, 'Obi Wan! Obi Wan!' I was trying to snog him and
people were doing light sabre impressions behind me, which was a bit
off-putting."
McGregor, she says, is the most down-to-earth actor she has met. As someone
who is so keen to keep her feet firmly on the ground, I can see why Atwell
puts such stock in this quality. "I was obviously terrified and he was very
patient with me. It's great to see someone that talented doing so well while
managing to keep that balance. He knows what's important, can have a laugh
and is just a lad with very strong roots."
(....)
Though Atwell concedes life has been "mad, mad, mad" since she left London's
Guildhall drama school in the summer of 2005, she plays down any notion of
being the next big thing. She doesn't want to be the next anything. "I don't
want to emulate or follow in the footsteps of anyone," she says. Being dubbed
the next Keira Knightley is all well and good, but Atwell points out that in
the fickle world of the film industry you're only as talented as your last
role. When I ask what she thinks about being described as Woody Allen's
latest muse, she becomes bashful: "Scarlett was probably busy and that's why
I ended up doing the film."
(這句還真蠻有可能的, 因為伍迪的下一部作品又找回史小妹....XD)
Ironically though, she says, before Allen cast her, she lost out to Johansson
for the lead in The Other Boleyn Girl, when the more famous actress swooped
in at the last minute. "You have to find a way of dealing with rejection and
insecurity very quickly in this job," she admits. "I get jobs while others
lose out, and I also lose out to others. That's the nature of the game."

個人認為the next Keira並不是什麼好稱號 :P
