DIERKS BENTLEY WITH MIRANDA LAMBERT, RANDY ROGERS BAND Saturday November 18, 2006 @ NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, IL RANDY ROGERS BAND - As the opener of the show it is the performers job to get the crowd warmed up and ready to go and The Randy Rogers band did just that. Rogers seemed surprised to see an almost full arena as he hit the stage with "This Time Around." As a veteran of the music industry Rogers knew that since the crowd really didn't know who they were that he had to keep the songs coming and he did just that by rolling into "Tonight's Not The Night," before pausing to talk about briefly about their new album "Just A Matter of Time," as they went into the album opener "Better Off Wrong." Rogers took a moment to thank everyone for coming out and introduced his band before they rolled into the title track of their new album "Just A Matter of Time," and quickly followed with a jumpy tune "You Could Change My Mind." Rogers again took note of the crowd and thanked everyone for coming out early to see them play as they played their latest single "Kiss Me In The Dark," before closing out their 35 minute set with "Down and Out." Rogers did the job and motivated the crowd and I am sure that with the catchy set list, they gained some new fans in Illinois. FULL SET LIST 1. This Time Around 2. Tonight's Not The Night 3. Down and Out -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MIRANDA LAMBERT - If it was the job of the Randy Rogers Band to get the crowd warmed up, then it was Miranda's job to get the crowd fired up for the arrival of Dierks Bentley. A tag that has been placed on Miranda, even when announced on this night is "the hottest rising star" and I think it's safe to say that after watching her performance, that tag will change into "a star is born" upon the release of her forthcoming album. She hit the stage to a huge ovation from the packed house and broke into her set opener "What About Georgia." She maintained the center portion of the stage strumming her guitar and smiling at the crowd. She asked everyone to sing along with "Me and Charlie Talking" and they did as asked, but I was surprised to see Miranda really staying put in the center of the stage. If you have seen her on TV you know that she has a ton of energy and likes to jump around and smash things, and once she put down her guitar for "I Wanna Die" she did just that and never stopped. She bounced around the stage from left to right, and got pretty close to the crowd on either side making everyone scream with her. Miranda introduced a new song to the crowd that as she stated "this is for you girls that have been mistreated by a guy." The song is another upbeat, rocking song with some country twang like only Miranda can do and while the crowd had no idea what song this was, that didn't stop them from jumping along with her as she stomped around the stage. She closed out the first half of her set with the only slower paced track she played, the second single from "Kerosene," "Bring Me Down." She continued to play the songs people knew with her latest radio hit "New Strings," which she again encouraged the crowd to sing along with. She had put her guitar back on for this one, but her band commanded the crowd on either side of the stage this time around. At this point in the set they seemed to being having a whole lot of fun and the crowd continued to soak it in as Miranda put down her guitar and ran around the stage as they played a cover of CCR's "Travelin' Band." Her energy continued to come at the crowd full swing as she broke into her hot, new single "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." She pounded the stage and walked with a cocky swagger as she pounded her chest as she sang "I'm a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." As the song came to a close the crowd erupted bringing a smile to Lambert's face and letting her know that the right song was picked to kick off her mainstream success of her sophomore album. The band broke into another cover of Steve Earle's "Hillbilly Highway" and tied it into the set closer "Kerosene." As Miranda bounced up and down around the stage the crowd continued to jump right along with her. They shouted out the lyrics as Lambert held out the microphone and with a quick wave to the crowd she exited the stage after an exciting, 40 minute performance chalked full of energy, and she more than did her job getting the crowd ignited. She will be a headliner really soon if all of her performances are like this one and the crowd on this night was certainly pleased with her show. FULL SET LIST 1. What About Georgia 2. Kerosene -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIERKS BENTLEY - The lights went dim and the crowd went crazy as the silhouettes of Dierks Bentley and his band walked onto the stage. Amongst the flashes of cameras, the opening notes of "Every Mile A Memory" began and the crowd erupted. The lights stayed pretty dim until the first chorus kicked in and a splash of light let the crowd see Bentley jump into the air as the crowd sang along with him. As the final notes were hit they tied it directly into an older song called "Forget About You," before he took a moment to say hello to the crowd. Dierks went to both sides of the stage and encouraged the crowd to sing with him as he said "I guess the lord made me hard to handle," and the crowd screamed and sang along with him. Back and forth they went as the band kicked into "A Lotta Leaving" and made the crowd erupt. Another track from "Modern Day Drifter" came next with the rocking tune "Cab of My Truck." He continued to keep the crowd singing along with him as he broke into "How Am I Doin," dedicating the final portion of the song to everyone's exes. After all of his running around, Dierks went back to center stage for a breather. He held up and beer and encouraged the crowd to hold up whatever they were drinking as the band rolled into "Domestic, Light, and Cold." He said he was looking for the dance floor as they played the upbeat, honky-tonk, influenced tune and halfway through the song he said he found it as he pointed at the middle of the crowd on the floor. With a nod to Hank Williams Sr. the first verse and chorus of "So Lonesome I Could Cry" was played and tied into the hit song "Settle For A Slowdown. The crowd was eating up everything that Bentley and crew were bringing as the final notes were hit. He kicked off the second portion of his set by mentioning a show that they played in DeKalb with Cross Canadian Ragweed and that the next song was sort of about those experiences as he went into a great new song called "Free And Easy," which he followed quickly with another one from the new album called "That Don't Make It Easy Loving Me." Bentley took a run to the right side of the stage as the band kicked into "So So Long." During the song Bentley took notice of the crowd on the left side of the stage rocking out with him and screaming back the lyrics so as he watched them sing with him he took a leap from the stage and jumped up into the crowd and sang along with them for the remainder of the song. The crowd of course went insane and Bentley just had a whole lot of fun with them. Whew! After that intimate moment with the crowd Bentley and crew moved to the center portion of the stage to play a somewhat newer version of "My Last Name," that included a heavy dose of upbeat, banjo. He dedicated it to the troops that were fighting for us overseas. Staying in the center portion of the stage, Bentley showed his bluegrass roots with a cover of the Del McCurdy Band's "Train Tarvelin." The crowd and Bentley took a quick breather as he introduced the next song, "Long Trip Alone." He mentioned that this is the new single and that radio stations have it now. I am surprised that this is the second single from his new album, but I must say that live it sounds a lot better than on the album. He then took a seat on the drum riser and smiled at the crowd as he began to strum his acoustic guitar to the beginning of "Come A Little Closer," which made everyone scream. During the song Bentley and the crowd played sing-a-long as he held the microphone out and said to the crowd "You sing to me now." He ended the song by saying "I fell like strippin' off that Little White Tank Top" and the band broke into "What Was I Thinkin" to close out their set. As he bounced around the stage and the crowd sang along with him tank tops came flying at him from the crowd. With a quick jump in the middle of the stage at the end of the song, Bentley and the band exited the stage leaving the crowd wanting more. With all of his hit songs now behind him, I had no idea what Dierks could possibly encore with, but this crowd certainly wasn't ready to let him leave just yet. With about 2 minutes of encouragement from the crowd, which included a small "we want Dierks" chant that started up, Bentley hit the stage. The band stood on the stage with the spotlight on them, grinning from ear to ear and thanking the crowd before they picked back up their instruments. Bentley said "this seems like a Honky Tonk crowd" as they broke into an old fan favorite with "Bartenders, etc…" He was indeed correct about the crowd as they danced along with him. He encouraged the crowd to be loud and if loud enough perhaps they could persuade Miranda and Randy Rogers back onto the stage as they played their set closer, a cover of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." The crowd must have been loud enough because Lambert and Rogers both came back out and rocked with Dierks and crew. As the song came to a close Bentley ran across the front of the stage from left to right slapping the hands of everyone in front and waved goodbye as he exited the stage to a huge ovation.
